Snails pace progress
So we are slowly eating our way to the back of the cupboards, fridge and freezer.. We are trying to eat all of the random things we have been looking past for a year or more and throw out as little as possible. We are only purchasing some veggies, fruit, cheese, bread, milk and yogurt. Kids have been inspired to eat simple, and fulfilling snacks....like a quick piece of toast with jam, fruit, a carrot...lots of fun for me but truthfully they are still begging for go gurts, chips and other unmentionables..On the other extreme Maeve is asking for a dairy cow because she read in the new york times that she could play it classical music and it would produce more milk...too funny..keeping on the good path..but will likely pass on the Cow for now.

The reluctant host of too much food!
We are in the process of making space for our new pantry. Curious how we can have shelves full of stuff and a fridge spilling out (both full of organic expensive food) yet everyone is constantly saying "there isn't anything to eat"! I consider myself food aware, OK that's kind, I think my friends and family may say I am food obsessed! I read read read about nutrition and have taken college courses on nutrition. I can whip up a darn good meal, yet in comparison to the money and time spent on food, I am failing miserably. I figured that I am spending on average 250.00 a week on food (this includes my Kombucha addiction)....A family of four should feel well fed on that right? This has boggled me for quite some time, but my solution was to go buy more food...Then something clicked while we were watching the new Hobbit movie and the kids were drooling over the feast reluctantly hosted by Mr Baggins. Maybe I need to step back and only provide simple, wholesome, homemade, food choices. So after some consulting with the Little people of this family we came up with the following list.
bread
butter
cheese
milk
eggs (from our laying hens)
yogurt
honey
fruit
veggies (lots are grown in our garden)
nuts
oatmeal
maple syrup
beans
rice
meat
fish
teas and coffee
Well that makes my life easier! What the heck have I been spending so much fricken money on? Lets look in the fridge and pantry to find out...
When all we want is something more like this......................................................
It may be a doll house dream but still we love it!

A journey of a lifetime
Today we embark on a brave and pertinent journey. We are going to transform our American cupboard into a hobbit inspired pantry. As we are spending an astronomical amount of money on food and all of the littles are always saying "there's nothing to eat".. Something needs to change! We are J.R Tolkein fans and are drawn into the wholesome simplicity of the Hobbit Pantry. We imagine organic, homemade, local, simple, plentiful, and affordable. No map exists to this unknown world so we are pioneers on a journey to reconnect with our food. We intend to transform our cluttered starving panrty into shelves brimmimg with beautiful nourishment and joy! Wish us luck!
